Rations and canned food

Every loose meal goes into the pantry. Cans stay closed until you have a can opener or the Spoon pass. The rations page then estimates the days you have left.

The pantry is the stockpile. Carrying an item into it raises the counter. Footage shows 19/49, 32/49, 34/49, and 38/49 in different apartments. I will not write 'you should have 49.'

Tinned fish added two portions in a recorded haul. Fridge leftovers added two. Crackers, eggs, and leftovers are all carried in. A full per-item portion table does not exist in the sources, so the cells stay blank.

Tins of tomatoes, corn, fish, and peas need a can opener. Without one, the can is weight, not a meal. The Spoon pass puts a spoon in the first hotbar slot and lets you eat a can without the opener. The spoon can also be a light weapon, and if you drop it, it stays where it fell.

Eating is hold F, one portion at a time, and the hunger bar comes back. On Day 1 the objective reads Plan today's rations. Open the in-game guide to the Rations page. One run said the food would last 12 more days. Use that as an example of the screen, not a target.

Neighbors trade two portions for a battery radio. That is food leaving the pantry on purpose. Ruth and Mara both do this in separate videos. Spend it when you want the broadcast, not before you know tomorrow's number.

Nothing in the sources says food never spoils, and nothing gives a rot timer. I am leaving spoilage blank. Cooking rice on a stove is only in one wiki and is not in the videos I used, so it is not a step here.

Questions

Why can't I eat a can?

Cans need a can opener, unless you own the Spoon pass, which the description says replaces the opener.

What is a good pantry count?

There isn't one number. Recorded apartments land anywhere from the high teens to the high thirties out of 49.
